JACKSONVILLE, Onslow County — A Jacksonville distillery is working to help medical agencies and area businesses in need of sanitizer.
Walton’s Distillery says it has already served multiple agencies with its sanitizer, including Onslow Memorial Hospital and Alzheimer’s Related Care in Jacksonville.
To make the sanitizer, those at the distillery say they make their classic moonshine, which begins at 50% alcohol. However, for the alcohol to function as a sanitizer, the staff distills the alcohol four more times, which brings it to 90%. The staff then adds water to the mix, creating sanitizer at 70% alcohol.
“We don’t have the aloe or glycerine or anything like that,” owner Donald Walton explains. “But, it’s sufficient to use it as a hand sanitizer or disinfect non-porous surfaces.”
So far, he says the distillery has produced approximately 110 gallons of sanitizer in its first batch.
Phyllis Bryan, the manager of Alzheimer’s Related Care, says she was down to about only 10 Clorox wipes left and could not find any containers at any stores. She reached out to Walton’s Distillery and received 2 gallons on Monday morning.
“I am so thankful that God has put people like this in place for us who can’t get what we need to take care of our residents,” says Bryan.
Walton says the distillery will continue to make sanitizer as long as supplies last.
